American Electric Power has posted the following on its Web site:

"We plan to be compliant in 1999, with sufficient lead times to allow testing and confirmation of compliance. However, due to the complexity of the problem and the interdependent nature of computer systems, if our corrective actions, and/or the actions of other entities not affiliated with AEP, fail for critical applications, AEP may be adversely impacted in the year 2000. Those adverse impacts cannot presently be determined."

That last sentence gets me thinking. How about, "the shutdown of the entire power generation system"? What adverse consequences would that have?
