A $2 Trillion Hit Will Not Help the Market



This estimate of the total cost of y2k worldwide is $2 trillion. Most estimates do not factor in downtime for businesses. This one does. Problem: It fails to mention litigation, which has been estimated in the $1 trillion range. Oh, well. What's a trillion bucks extra in this can't-lose stock market?

This projection includes the cost of rewriting existing programs, the acquisition and installation of replacement systems, and productivity lost due to system downtime and business interruption caused by failing systems not in year 2000 compliance.
