Comment:

The University of Oklahoma's Health Science Center has a Year 2000 site. Here is its description of what could happen if the problem is not solved.

My conclusion: write for your college transcripts this week.

WHAT ARE THE UNIVERSITY'S RISKS?

If the University did nothing to correct the Year 2000 problem, the following is just a sample of the kinds of failures which could happen. The occurrence of any ONE of these events would be considered catastrophic on campus:

•Can't enroll students

•Can't collect tuition

•Can't process scholarships

•Can't process student loans

•Can't provide information to the State Capitol

•Can't provide information to the State Regents

•Can't process grants

•Can't provide financial statements

•Can't pay the University's bills

•Can't collect from the University's debtors

•Can't process bills for the service units

•Can't operate the phone system

•Can't produce transcripts

•Can't manage the physical facilities

•Can't process purchasing requisitions from departments

•Can't purchase items from vendors

•Can't process the budget

•Can't process with departmental decision-support systems

Correcting the various aspects of the Year 2000 problem is the most serious, comprehensive, and daunting task which has ever faced Information Technology (IT) at the Health Sciences Center, or at any other organization. We cannot afford to ignore or dismiss lightly this issue, for the consequences of doing so will be great.
