This story from the Topeka Capital-Journal (Oct. 28) reveals how dependent farmers are on Union Pacific. What is described here will be multipled many times over in 2000.

Two railroads have different computer systems. Think of every railroad, each with a noncompliant system. Then how will they sort it out?

Shipping delays and train shortages are a problem every year at harvest time, but the problems were compounded this year by the September merger of the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific railways. The two rail lines have had trouble coordinating their management, schedules and even computer systems.
