Dead Engines in Fire Trucks

Comment:

This one threatens engines manufactured since 1985 if they are governed by an embedded maintenance chip. Most cars will be OK (we hope). But this problem may affect fire trucks, according to an April 17, 1997, report from the state of Texas. An estimated 25% of fire trucks built since 1985 could fail to start on Jan. 1, 2000.

It is this kind of problem, ignored by those who will become victims, that challenges the world. Computer chips are everywhere. It is no small task to locate all noncompliant chips and replace them. It will become harder and harder as the deadline approaches.

Men can't think through everything, but we have to this time.
